Primary and Pre-School

Sport

At Upton-upon-Severn we aim to develop a healthy lifestyle through the encouragement of fitness, healthy eating and sporting skills in all our pupils.  Our wellbeing and mental health is of equal importance and we build an inclusive, loving, forgiving and healthy school. From the start of Pre-School we embrace the learning outside environment and our children’s physical fitness is enhanced through our extensive curriculum. Our sports curriculum specifically covers gymnastics, outdoor and adventurous activities, dance, games, athletics and swimming.  As part of the curriculum children in Years 2, 3 and 4 work towards water skills awards in their swimming lessons.  All children in Years 4, 5 and 6 take part in our bell boating activities and we are fortunate enough to actually own two bell boats which are kept in the Marina at Upton-upon-Severn.

Throughout each year group, a variety of different focus ensure that age-appropriate activities encourage an active lifestyle for our children and that they understand the impact on their health. Developing resilience and working towards a healthy lifestyle ensures that children become physically confident as they develop. Competitive sport is an important aspect of our PE curriculum and from Pre-School, children learn to compete against each other in a fun, interactive and safe environment to develop competence in a broad range of skills. We want our children to be able to be healthy individuals and therefore the importance of physical activity for sustained periods is key. Our daily mile running track, installed with money from the sports premium, has ensured that everyone including our grown-ups are able to have daily sustained physical activity to build their fitness and resilience.

Through all our sports endeavours, we work with the underpinning of our school vision ‘Anything is Possible, we can all succeed’ we know as we grow that if we have a strong team ethos, this can underpin success. We have recently been awarded the Schools Games Mark Gold Award. We are incredibly proud of this achievement and this shows the significant impact of our sports programme. Upton itself is a wonderful place for a child to flourish, we have extensive sporting facilities through the school; we offer bell-boating, table tennis, hockey, karate, dance, rugby, rounders, netball, cricket, football and have even taken part in ice skating at the local rink in Malvern.
