Computing
INTENT
Computing at Upton-Upon-Severn Primary School aims to develop ‘future thinkers’. Our curriculum is ambitious, varied and relevant which will allow our children to become digitally literate, RESPONSIBLE thinkers who RESPECT the digital world they are engaged in. In an ever-changing digital world, our children will collaborate and develop a sense of identity within their digital COMMUNITY, PERSEVERING with computational thinking and having the COURAGE to know when the use of technology can support their learning. We want our children to TRUST in each other and themselves and remain safe whilst working online. We encourage creativity and aspiration and support our children to know that anything can be possible if they put their minds to it.
IMPLEMENTATION
A broad and balanced curriculum is essential for creating responsible, creative and successful digital learners. We teach our curriculum through blocks of learning covering the four main areas:
· COMPUTER SCIENCE
· INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
· DIGITAL LITERACY
· E-SAFETY
E-safety as a theme runs throughout each unit with the first session dedicated to reminding children of the main concepts of e-safety and how this is important within that topic.
Our curriculum has been designed in a bespoke way- drawing upon experience and utilising the resources we have in school in the most effective way. It is adapted from the Teach Computing scheme of work and covers all areas of the National Curriculum. It has a wide variety of activities that allow children to develop skills and deep knowledge whilst participating in a purposeful project.
Within each year group there is progression between units- for example in computational thinking- and there is progression across year groups with certain topics being covered in more depth, using skills already acquired in previous years. These are inter-connected and create connected thinkers and learners who can apply digital skills.
The curriculum has also been designed to ensure staff have access to high-quality resources to support CPD. Computing teaching is practical and engaging and a variety of teaching approaches and activities are provided based on teacher judgement and pupil ability.
IMPACT
Assessment for learning is consistently planned for and included in lessons through questioning and low-stakes quizzes. These are built in to the lesson structure. Teachers consider misconceptions and areas of possible difficulty prior to the learning sequence and plan to address and resolve these. Assessment of learning occurs through extended questions requiring application of recalled knowledge.
Children are encouraged to use and apply digital skills across the curriculum and make connections and links with their learning. Curriculum links help children to be successful in a variety of subjects including Maths (data handling), Science (collecting data), English (information technology), Art and Design (digital drawing), History and Geography (research skills).
Assessment is completed through teacher judgement at the end of each unit using the learning graphs which collate the key skills and concepts covered in the unit.
